Culture: The Air We Breathe

Culture is a foundational element of every organization. It is “soft” in the sense that it is intangible, but actually it is quite hard.

Culture creates hard impact (both positive and negative); it can be hard to define; and it is hard to change. Culture has clear and demonstrable effects on the performance of every employee and of the company as a whole.

It can be defined and measured, as we will see. And it is very much the business of the CEO, as exemplified both by Lou Gerstner (“Culture is the game”) and by the famous line attributed to management guru Peter Drucker, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.”
